How to process cabbage from caterpillars and slugs

Hello! My garden is the main supplier for my food. I don’t eat meat, I don’t eat dairy products.

So vegetables are my everything. I especially like cabbage. But this season, her harvest was in great jeopardy.

The vigorous activity of slugs and caterpillars seriously spoiled the state of my favorite vegetable. Only a third of the crop has survived. A good lesson to me for the future. Now I know how to avoid this. Want to know how to process cabbage from caterpillars and slugs? Then read below effective measures to combat these parasites.

Pests of cabbage and methods of dealing with them

Having noticed the corroded cabbage leaves, everyone who set out to get a good harvest, thinks about how to process cabbage from pests. In the arsenal of experienced gardeners, there are many effective ways and useful tips that can help in the fight against parasites.

Important!
There are not so many hunters to feast on fresh and mouth-watering cabbages, but, much to the regret of summer residents, it is hard to get them out. Slugs and snails, caterpillars, flies and a cruciferous flea annually add a lot of care to inveterate gardeners.

But before you go to the store for chemicals, you should familiarize yourself with more environmentally friendly and affordable means of protecting the sites.

Cruciferous flea

Almost imperceptible, painted in black and silver, moves very quickly and deftly jumps, loves seedlings and young leaves very much. Having noticed small holes on them, the first thing is to start the fight against the cabbage flea. If you do not start treatment on time, this will lead to the death of plants and the spread of parasites.

There are several ways, they can be used together or separately. Before processing cabbage from pests, carefully study each method to choose the most affordable and suitable.

You can cover the beds with a non-woven covering fabric, thereby blocking the access of insects to them. After the seedlings get stronger, and the leaves become coarser, the coating can be removed, since the plant will become inedible for a flea.

The cabbage garden should be sprinkled with ash or its mixture with tobacco dust. This protection is very effective, but after rain, dew or fog, this coating will have to be updated. A flea is very sensitive to odors, so fir oil should be added to irrigation water (up to 15 drops per bucket).

It is also useful to plant garlic at the beginning of the season and place cabbage seedlings between them at the first shoots between them. A sharp and specific aroma will help repel the insect.

Processing cabbage from pests with vinegar is an effective and proven folk method. It consists in spraying the beds with table vinegar (7%), diluted in 10 liters of water. Experts advise to refine the weather forecast before treating cabbage from pests with vinegar.

Advice!
If it is hot, dry weather, it is better to spray after sunset so that the leaves do not get burns. One procedure should be enough.

A good means is spraying cabbage from parasites with infusion of chicken manure (100-200 grams are added to a 10 liter bucket, left for a day until completely dissolved). In addition to protection, it will become an excellent fertilizer that allows you to quickly grow and grow seedlings.

Butterflies and larvae of cabbage scoops

Cabbage scoop larvae
Cabbage scoop larvae

The white butterfly, inconspicuous in appearance, or cabbage, or the gray cabbage scoop, is one of the most dangerous pests for cabbage plantations. It lays millions of eggs, from which yellow-black caterpillars appear over time, which can completely destroy the future crop. Larvae often find themselves even in cabbage heads.

There are a lot of answers to the question of how to spray cabbage from pests. Experienced gardeners recommend applying several folk methods at the same time. At the same time, they should be selected, depending on the type of parasite that has settled on your beds.

To spray the plants in dry weather, you should use an infusion of liquid soap (2 cups) with ash (one tablespoon) in 10 liters of water.

It is considered useful to fertilize the earth and plants by treating the garden with tincture of onion husks, which will scare away insects with their strong smell. To prepare a miracle cure, you need to take 0.5 kg of husk, pour 4 liters of hot water and insist a couple of days, add a spoon of tar shampoo before use. Spray cabbage every 3-4 days.

Cabbage is also protected from pests using ordinary baking soda, which sprinkles with seedlings (it is important not to overdo it; in the absence of effect, it can be repeated).

Cabbage pests fear wasps, as they eat their eggs and larvae. This can be used for the benefit of the future crop. Sugar syrup or old, diluted jam - this is how to water cabbage from caterpillars inexpensively and effectively. Wasps instantly flock to the smell of sweet and at the same time eat insects.

How to fight. A complex approach

The larvae of May beetles, cabbage flies and winter scoops living in the ground are especially dangerous because they can destroy not only foliage, but also cabbage roots during crop formation.

Attention!
You can use one of the methods described, but before treating cabbage from pests with folk remedies, it is worth considering that jam or soap can attract ants, and green cabbage aphid will appear after them.

First of all, it attacks young leaves, because of which they are covered with characteristic black dots and begin to curl.

Then how to spray cabbage from pests with folk remedies in order to get a good harvest? An integrated approach is needed using several drugs in the following sequence:

  1. Get rid of aphids. The right tool to prepare at home is easy - 1 tbsp is taken. a spoonful of mustard and the same amount of soap shavings, a glass of tobacco dust and ash. Insist a day in a bucket of hot water, the resulting solution should be carefully filtered before use.
  2. It works well against larvae that damage the roots, onion husks, so we prepare the tincture, as described above, and process the beds the next day.
  3. Now we use surface treatment of soil with ashes as protection, and we resume it after rains and watering.

How to water cabbage from pests. Snails and slugs

Slugs and snails with the onset of night creep out into the vegetable gardens to feast on. Juicy cabbage leaves and well-preserved moisture in the plants attract them.To get rid of them, experts share tips on how to water cabbage from pests:

  • Ammonia dissolved in 5-6 liters of liquid (40-50 ml). It should be applied directly to the heads of cabbage, repeating this manipulation several times in a row.
  • An excellent bait will be the tanks dug in the area with fermented juices, kvass or yeast. Snails and slugs will creep into their alluring scent. You just have to collect them in the morning and destroy them.
  • Processing cabbage from pests with folk remedies such as mustard powder is especially popular. Thanks to him, you can forget about snails. The only problem is that it needs to be updated after each watering.
  • Additionally, you can use the following recipe: in a 10-liter container with boiling water, you need to place up to a kilogram of chopped garlic and unpeeled onions. This composition is boiled for three hours, filtered, cooled and used to water the garden.

Universal and chemical protection methods

It should be noted that almost all pests do not like the aroma of fragrant herbs, so it is recommended to plant mint, dill, cilantro, celery, basil, parsley or rosemary near the beds or among cabbage plantings. In addition, these plants attract beneficial insects: lacewings, rider beetles and ladybugs.

If you place flower beds with nasturtium or marigolds near the plantings, this will not only decorate your site and give charm to the garden, but also allow you to get rid of harmful butterflies-cabbage and aphids.

Chemicals. In addition to the folk remedies and treatments described above, you can use chemical preparations. Most often they are used for processing large areas, or for urgent exposure, when there are already too many insects. For such purposes, fit:

  • Bankol;
  • Fury
  • Iskra-M;
  • Kemifos.

As a rule, the amount of funds needed to process a certain area of the plot is indicated on the package. For example, 4 ml of Bancol is diluted in five liters of water, and it is enough to process 100 square meters.

Important!
Parasitic insects not only harm the cultivated plants on the site, but also spread diseases. Therefore, complex treatment of cabbage beds is often necessary.

Before spraying cabbage from pests, you need to find out exactly who affected your site. After that, you can take the advice of our gardening experts to protect your crop. Put your knowledge into practice, and care for cabbage beds will no longer cause problems.

How to get rid of pests of cabbage without chemistry

There are not too many pests in cabbage, but they are all as if they were “unkillable” ones. Cruciferous flea, caterpillars, slugs and snails, cabbage fly larvae cause a lot of problems to the gardener every year. It seems that they are invincible, and it is high time to run to the store for poison.

Fight against cruciferous flea without chemistry

The cruciferous flea is a ubiquitous, small, jumping black scoundrel with a silver tint. She attacks first, for she loves to feast on young leaves of cabbage seedlings, and especially adores Beijing cabbage.

Since a flea eats three times more weight per day, its presence is immediately noticeable: cabbage leaves are covered in small holes. If nothing is done, soon only veins will remain from the leaflet, and then it will die. What helps with cruciferous fleas?

The first way. If you have a lot of non-woven covering fabric, then you can do simple: cover the planting of young cabbage. Access to the cruciferous flea bed will be closed. After a while, the seedlings will get stronger, its leaves will grow rough and lose attractiveness to the pest, and the coating can be removed.

The second way. It is good to sprinkle freshly planted seedlings of cabbage with ash or a mixture of ash and tobacco dust in equal proportions.The disadvantage of this method is that every time after watering, rain or fog, you will have to renew the ash spraying.

The third way. At the very beginning of the summer season, plant spring garlic on a cabbage bed. When the garlic shoots appear, plant cabbage seedlings next to them. The smell of garlic will confuse the cruciferous flea, and it will bypass the garden side.

Advice!
The fourth way. Cruciferous flea dislike for pungent odors can play into our hands. Add fir oil to the water for irrigation (10-15 drops per bucket), and for fidelity at first cover the young cabbage with the tops of plastic bottles.

The fifth way. Spray the plant with a weak infusion of chicken droppings. It will not only help from a flea, but will also serve as nitrogen top dressing for cabbage. The leaves will grow stronger and grow faster, and the flea will not be afraid of them.

How to get rid of caterpillar tracks and cabbage scoops

Everyone knows the butterfly cabbage or cabbage whitewash in the face. A white butterfly with a black border on its wings lays eggs on the underside of the cabbage leaf, from which yellowish caterpillars with black spots emerge. These "gluttonous belly" and then eat our cabbage.

Cabbage scoop is a less noticeable gray butterfly, similar to a nocturnal moth, but its larvae can often be found inside cabbage heads. Small green caterpillars can seriously compete with the white butterfly in the struggle for a juicy leaf.

How to handle cabbage from caterpillars

The first way. If wasps live on your site, make them useful. Dilute old jam, compote or just sugar and sprinkle cabbage with sweet water. The smell will undoubtedly attract to the cabbage bed of wasps, large hunters to sweets. Wasps feed their offspring with caterpillars, so they will not miss the opportunity to "clear" cabbage from them.

The second way. Pour 2 cups of ash and a tablespoon of liquid soap (even better tar shampoo) with 10 liters of water and insist for a day. Then spray the cabbage with infusion.

The third way. As soon as they began to notice cabbage flies flying in the area, place the sticks with eggshells suspended on them in the cabbage bed. They say that butterflies take the shell for their own kind and do not lay eggs where it is already "occupied."

The fourth way. Prepare an infusion of tomato tops or onion peels. This simple folk remedy will scare away butterflies with an unusual smell.

A liter jar of onion husks should be poured with two liters of hot water and insisted for two days. Then bring the volume of infusion to four liters, add a tablespoon of liquid soap.

Attention!
To prepare a tomato infusion, 1.5-2 kilograms of tops or stepsons are poured with 5 liters of hot water and infused for 3-4 hours. Then boil for another 3 hours, after which it is filtered and diluted with water in a ratio of 1: 2. For better adhesion of the infusion before spraying, 20-30 grams of laundry or tar soap is also added to it.

The fifth way. Sprinkle cabbage leaves with a mixture of baking soda and flour in equal proportions (here you can add a little pollen of any plants from the cruciferous family). Caterpillars on such a diet die, but for plants no harm.

The sixth way. Sprinkle the cabbage and the ground under it with the infusion of burdock or garlic. To prepare the first, the leaves of burdock are finely chopped and insisted for three days in a bucket of water, based on a ratio of 1: 3. Garlic infusion is prepared as follows: pass through the press ten heads of garlic, pour five liters of cold water and insist for three days.

Folk remedies against slugs and snails

Slugs and snails are invisible night hunters to our cabbage. During the day they hide in the secluded, dark and humid corners of the plot, and in the evening creep out onto cabbage beds and eat, eat, eat ... In the morning, all the leaves of cabbage are in uneven holes, and no one is visible - slugs hid. What to do in this case?

The first way. Good old folk method of dealing with slugs - device bait.To do this, in the evening (at 20-21 hours), when the slugs begin to get out of the shelters, next to the cabbage bed, trays of kvass, juice, beer or diluted jam with yeast are dripped.

You can moisten old rags or burdock leaves in the “drink” and spread them over the furrows. Throughout the night, the slugs will crawl into the smell, and in the morning you can take pests with your bare hands.

The second way. Sprinkle mustard powder between the cabbage. Slugs can't stand him.

The third way. Prepare a solution of 40 ml. ammonia in 5-6 liters of water and pour from a watering can directly on the leaves and heads of cabbage. After a few minutes, return to the garden and repeat the procedure: at this point, all the slugs will come out of the ground and from the cabbage, and the ammonia solution "will hit right on the enemy."

Important!
The fourth way. Tear and lay out leaves and stalks of nettles on the bed. For nettles, slugs will not climb to your cabbage. True, it dries quickly, so nettle protection needs to be updated every day, but this is more of a plus than a minus, because you are simultaneously fighting slugs and mulching plantings with wonderful organic material.

The fifth way. The crushed egg shells scattered around the cabbage will become an insurmountable obstacle for mollusks. But where to get so many shells? Save up all winter!

The sixth way. Sprinkle the soil on the cabbage bed with an infusion of hot pepper. To prepare it, you need to grind 100 grams of pepper, pour a liter of water and insist for two days. Then bring to a boil and insist another day. Then squeeze the pepper and strain the infusion.

Half a glass of pepper infusion is diluted in a bucket of water and, as usual, a spoonful of liquid soap is added before spraying. The remaining concentrate can be stored in tightly closed containers in a dark and cool place.

The seventh method. The beds, where slugs are rampant, are shed with a solution of ordinary pharmacy greens (1 bottle per bucket of water). Slugs go away.

We destroy the larvae of scoops, chafer, cabbage fly

The larvae of the May beetle, winter scoop or cabbage fly are called underground pests of cabbage, since they destroy not the leaves, but the roots during the formation of the head of cabbage. The result of their work is always on the face: the plant instantly withers, dries and dies.

To combat larvae, garden ants can be attracted to the garden. They, like wasps, slide down for sweets, so it makes sense to dig a jar with jam diluted in water next to a wilted bush.

Black ants will react to the bait and, at the same time, will find larvae, which are their natural habitual food.

How to deal with cabbage aphids

Greenish cabbage aphids usually attack young plants. Black dots appear on them, leaves curl. If the aphids are not destroyed, the plant will die soon. Measures to control cabbage aphids are given below.

The first way. Spraying with infusion of tomato tops, prepared in the same way as in the fight against caterpillars.

Advice!
The second way. Treat the plants with soapy water (300-400 grams of soap per 10 liters of water), repeat the procedure after a week.

The third way. Sprinkle cabbage with a complex infusion against aphids. To prepare it a glass of ash, a glass of tobacco dust, a tablespoon of mustard and a tablespoon of liquid soap, pour 10 liters of hot water and leave for a day. Then strain and use the wrecker on the mountain.

Universal Pest Management Methods

Almost all cabbage pests are not happy with the smell of herbs, so the best way to get rid of them is to plant dill, carrots, parsley or celery on seeds, mint, rosemary, sage, basil or cilantro.

The smells of these herbs and seeds will scare away slugs, fleas, butterflies and aphids, but they will attract their natural enemies - ladybugs, beetle riders, and lacewings.

In addition to herbs and vegetables, flowers can also help in controlling pests of cabbage.Place next to the cabbage bed flower beds with marigolds or feverfew, plant one nasturtium flower between the cabbage. Scoops, cabbage, aphids will forget the way to your site.

If you’re already late with the planting of “aromatic helpers” and pests attack, use the universal decoction of the decoction, which is not to the taste of almost all enemies of the garden: chop 700 grams of unpeeled garlic bulbs, scald with 10 liters of boiling water and boil for 2-3 hours. Then strain, dilute with water (1: 1) and water your beds.

How to get rid of pests of cabbage folk remedies

Such a plant as cabbage does not have a lot of pests, but the fight against them is not always successful. The enemies of cabbage include caterpillars, snails, scoops, fleas, chafer, aphids.

Every year they give gardeners a lot of problems. However, do not rush to poison cabbage pests with chemical agents. There are many folk methods that you can use to process plants.

Cruciferous flea

In appearance, the flea is small, dark in color with a brilliant shimmer, very nimble and insatiable. On cabbage, she appears first, because she loves to eat leaflets of young shoots. Especially, the cruciferous flea loves to attack Beijing cabbage.

Attention!
The presence of this pest on the plant is immediately evident: young leaves become like a sieve. If you do not fight insects, they eat all the leaves and the plant dies.

If you have a non-woven fabric available, then just cover them with cabbage seedlings planted on the bed. In this case, the pest does not penetrate the fence. After the plant gets stronger and the leaves become coarser, the cruciferous flea will lose all interest in this food.

As soon as you planted seedlings of cabbage, immediately sprinkle it with ash. You can add tobacco dust to the ash. Remember that after rain or watering, cabbage processing must be resumed.

Cruciferous flea
Cruciferous flea

Cruciferous flea does not like the smell of garlic. Therefore, in the area where you will plant cabbage, first plant spring garlic. When young shoots of garlic appear, cabbage seedlings can be planted in the aisle. Insects will bypass this area.

These pests are generally afraid of pungent odors. Therefore, you can water the shoots of cabbage with a solution of water and fir oil. 10-13 drops of oil are enough for a bucket of water.

A weak solution of bird droppings will help rid the shoots of cabbage from insects, and will also serve as a good feeding. Fast-growing plants may not be afraid of fleas.

Cabbage Caterpillars

White and black striped butterfly cabbage is known to all. She lays eggs on the leaves of cabbage. And from them voracious caterpillars that destroy the cabbage are hatched. How to deal with these pests?

Have wasps in their area that feed their babies with caterpillars. Dissolve sugar or all that is sweet in your home with water and treat the infected cabbage with this compound. This will attract wasps, which in turn will clear the plant of pests.

Make an infusion: on a bucket of water 2 cups of ash and 20 g tar tar shampoo or liquid soap. After the mixture is infused (24 hours), it can be sprayed with cabbage.

When the cabbage butterflies appear on your site, place the sticks on which to hang the eggshell. Experienced gardeners argue that in this case, the butterflies fly away without laying eggs on the cabbage. Apparently, they think that it is already taken here.

For scaring butterflies, an onion smell is also suitable. To do this, you need to prepare an infusion: 2 liters of hot water and onion peel (one-liter jar). All this insist 40-45 hours. Then strain, add water to get a solution of 4 liters.

Important!
So that when spraying the infusion sticks better to the leaves of cabbage, about 25 g of laundry soap can be added to it.

Cabbage leaves can be sprinkled with baking soda, which the caterpillars cannot tolerate.At the same time, soda does not harm the plant.

Snails and slugs

These cabbage pests hunt only at night. On a sunny day, they hide in dark and wet places, and at night they eat cabbage leaves, leaving holes on them. How to be?

There is a sure folk way to deal with these pests. It is necessary to set traps near the site where cabbage grows. To do this, before sunset, add a shallow dish with sweet water with the addition of yeast, you can also use kvass and beer.

You can simply dampen rags in these drinks and place them along rows with cabbage. In the morning you can collect the pests that have gathered for a revel.

Sprinkle the plant with mustard powder. Slugs will crawl away from him.

To destroy snails and slugs, this solution is suitable: add 6 milliliters of ammonia to 6 liters of water. With this solution, pour the cabbage completely with the leaves. After 20-30 minutes, repeat the procedure. Pests will come out of the earth and plants, and they can be seen.

It is possible to spread nettles on a site with cabbage. These cabbage enemies will not climb stinging nettles. But it will need to be changed often, as this plant dries up.

Around the cabbage, you can pour crushed egg shells or shells. Shellfish will not spoil their delicate bodies.

Maybug larvae, scoops, cabbage flies

The larvae of these insects attack the roots of the plant during the formation of the cabbage head. These underground pests are difficult to detect, but their presence is immediately evident: cabbage leaves quickly wither, turn yellow and the plant dies.

Garden ants can help get rid of harmful larvae. If you notice that the cabbage bush is starting to wilt, immediately immediately radically drip a jar of any sweet liquid. Ants will quickly crawl to the bait, where they will find the larvae that they feed on.

Cabbage aphid

Cabbage aphid has a salad shade. She attacks only young cabbage. Dark dots appear on the leaves, and they simply fold. If you do not fight aphids, cabbage quickly dies.

Infected young cabbage must be treated with this solution: 300 g of laundry soap per bucket of water. After 7-10 days, this procedure must be repeated.

Advice!
Aphids and an infusion of several ingredients will not like: a bucket of hot water - 200 g of ash, 200 g of tobacco, 20 g of mustard, 20 g of liquid soap. Insist 24 hours, then strain and you can process problem plants.

You can use the universal grandfather method, which is effective against all enemies of cabbage. This is the use of odors of various spicy plants that cabbage pests do not tolerate. So, in the area where cabbage grows, you can plant dill, parsley, mint, cilantro, sage. In addition, these plants will attract insects such as ladybugs, beetles, which are enemies for these pests.

Also, against cabbage pests you can apply the smell of flowers. Plant marigolds, nasturtiums next to cabbage. Harmful insects will not even come close to this place.

Also, to destroy pests of cabbage, you can cook a universal decoction that will suit almost all garden enemies. Grind 700 grams of garlic with husk. Then pour boiling water (10 liters) and boil for 3 hours. Strain the cooled mixture and dilute with water in a ratio of 1: 1. With this solution you can water your garden.

Chemical preparations for cabbage pests

Chemical agents against cabbage pests need to be used as a last resort. Today, the industry produces a wide range of products for the control of garden pests.

In stores, you can buy chemicals to process only cabbage. This is “Iskra-M”, “Kemifos”, “Fury”, etc. Before using these drugs, be sure to read the instructions and clearly adhere to the recommendations.

For the treatment of cabbage, you can also apply such a chemical agent as “Bancol”. Prepare a solution: for 5 liters of water - 4 ml of the drug. With this tool, you can process a whole hundred garden.

Folk remedies for pests of cabbage

Juicy cabbage leaves seem like a real bait for pests: cabbage aphids, caterpillars, cruciferous fleas. Especially many troubles are caused by cabbage pests to inexperienced gardeners who do not know that the crop can be completely spoiled by parasites who like to feast on all parts of the plant, including the roots.

Attention!
On the market for garden products, pest control products are quite widely represented. One problem: basically, they somehow have chemical compounds of varying degrees of toxicity.

Despite the assurances of experts that, when used correctly, these compounds are harmless to humans, gardeners are justifiably afraid of chemical insecticides.

How to grow cabbage without chemistry?

Prevention Simple measures help prevent the appearance of cabbage pests:

  • thorough cleaning and disposal (best of all, burning) of plant residues after harvesting cabbage;
  • digging and leveling the soil (in autumn);
  • if possible, early planting of seedlings in the ground, so that it has time to grow stronger before the appearance of pests;
  • protection of cabbage ridges with covering materials: this is the easiest way to avoid the attack of the cruciferous flea and prevent the butterfly butterflies from laying eggs, from which caterpillars then emerge;
  • in spring and summer - weeding of weeds related to cabbage: colza, shepherd’s bag, field yarrow. Pests of cabbage settle on them and subsequently transferred to the ridges.

You can protect cabbage from pests at the stage of planting in the ground, planting other garden plants nearby.

  • Garlic. From emits volatile substances that repel cabbage flies;
  • Dill or tomatoes. Prevent the appearance of cabbage aphids.
  • Sage with its smell drives away cabbage scoop.
  • Borago (cucumber grass) protects against slug attacks.
  • Wormwood, mint and tansy scare cabbage flies and caterpillars of cabbage white.

Unfortunately, prevention does not guarantee absolute protection of cabbage from pests, so be prepared to regularly inspect the planting for the appearance of uninvited guests.

Pests of cabbage and how to deal with them

Aphid started on cabbage. White and brown spots appear on the leaves, leaves become discolored, curl up, shoots and buds acquire a bluish-pink hue. The development of heads of cabbage stops, cabbage begins to lag behind in growth.

Clusters of aphids can be seen with the naked eye: these are gray-greenish creeping insects about 2 mm long, covered with whitish wax dust.

How to treat cabbage from aphids? If the cabbage is small, and the aphid colonies were noticed early, simply rubbing the leaves with a cloth and a solution of laundry soap (300-400 g of soap per 10 liters of water) can help. After a week, the procedure must be repeated.

Also, folk remedies for cabbage aphids include the following.

  1. Infusion of tomato tops and onion peels. For cooking, you need 0.5 kg of onion husks and 1.5 - 2 kg of tops or stepsons of tomatoes. The leaves are brewed with 5 liters of boiling water and insisted for about 4 hours, then boiled for 3 hours, filtered and added water in a ratio of 1: 2. The husk is poured with hot water (approx. 2 liters) and insisted for no more than two days, after which another 2 liters of water and a little liquid soap are added. After that, both infusions are mixed and sprayed with the resulting composition of cabbage.
  2. Infusion of ash, tobacco dust, mustard and liquid soap. Take a glass of tobacco dust and ash and a tablespoon of mustard and soap, pour hot water (10 l) and insist for a day. Tobacco dust is one of the most common pest control products: it is harmless to plants and humans, inexpensive and easy to use.
  3. A decoction of tobacco.400-500 g of tobacco leaves are poured into 2 liters of water, boiled for 2 hours, then filtered, add approx. 50 g of soap and dilute the resulting composition in a bucket of water.
  4. A decoction of garlic, which is used as a universal remedy against most cabbage pests. To prepare the broth, take 700-800 g of garlic (preferably onions with husk), pour 10 liters of boiling water and boil for 2 hours. Before watering, dilute with water in a ratio of 1: 1.

Caterpillars settled on the cabbage. Gluttonous caterpillars are the larvae of two species of butterflies: cabbage scoops and the well-known cabbage white. Small caterpillars of a scoop most often live inside a head of cabbage, therefore, when a quick inspection of cabbage they can not be noticed immediately.

Folk remedies for caterpillars on cabbage:

  • infusion of ash and tar shampoo (soap): take a teaspoon of shampoo and 5 liters of water on a glass of ash, insist for a day, then sprinkle cabbage;
  • sprinkling cabbage with baking soda;
  • spraying with infusion of tomato and onion peel tops. They can also process cabbage from aphids;
  • manual collection of caterpillars (if you grow a little cabbage);
  • Attraction of wasps - natural enemies of caterpillars. Sprinkling cabbage with sweet water, diluted jam or syrup lures these predatory insects to the cabbage ridges.

Sometimes you can find advice to hang eggshells on cabbage beds. It is believed that it discourages butterflies: they allegedly take shells for the wings of competitors who previously took their place. There is no statistics confirming the effectiveness of this method, but it is worth a try.

Important!
Beetles appeared in cabbage. Most often, cabbage planting is attacked by tiny jumping bugs - blue, green, striped or black with low tide. These are different types of cruciferous flea, one of the worst enemies of cabbage.

Cruciferous flea eats leaves and is able to very quickly leave them only streaks. It is dangerous for very young plants, because their leaves are soft and tender.

Rigid leaves of adult plants do not attract bugs, so the main task of the gardener is to protect the seedlings until they get stronger. The first signs of a cruciferous flea lesion are small holes in the leaves.

Folk remedies for cruciferous fleas:

  • adding fir oil to the water for irrigation, the smell of which fleas do not tolerate;
  • watering with a regular flea shampoo, which you can buy at a pet store;
  • dusting plantings with hot pepper, slaked lime, ash or a mixture of tobacco dust and ash in a ratio of 1: 1. This should be done on wet leaves, so that the product can fix on them. After rain or watering, the protective layer must be renewed.

For spraying:

  • infusion of chicken manure in a small concentration (1:20), aged for 6-7 days;
  • infusion of ash and tar soap (shampoo);
  • a mixture of garlic (1 cup), tomato tops (1 cup) and liquid soap (1 tbsp.) passed through a meat grinder, diluted in 10 l of water;
  • soap infusion with soap;
  • vinegar heavily diluted with water (250 ml of 9% vinegar in a bucket of water).

Cabbage may appear and leaf beetles - these are also beetles, but of larger sizes (up to 5 mm), dark green, with a metallic sheen. Cabbage leaf beetle gnaws rather large holes in the leaf or eats recesses along the edge.

It is recommended to process the cabbage from the leaf beetle with tobacco dust, slaked lime, ash or a mixture of all these ingredients.

Cabbage was eaten by slugs and snails. These leisurely and deceptively harmless creatures can cause serious damage to the cabbage. They feed mainly at night and gnaw holes and whole furrows in the cabbage leaves.

How to remove slugs folk remedies:

  1. Sprinkle with mustard powder or crushed eggshells;
  2. remove the lower leaves so that the slugs could not crawl out on the head of the earth, or build a special “collar” that covers the lower part of the head.
  3. spray the soil with the infusion of hot pepper;
  4. pour cabbage with water with the addition of ammonia (50 ml per 5-6 liters of water), wait for the slugs to crawl out of the heads of cabbage and earth, then repeat the procedure.

Cabbage Fly: The Invisible Enemy. The danger of the cabbage fly is that the results of the vital activity of its larvae become noticeable far away at once, and the fly itself does not look much different from the usual one. At the end of May, this insect lays eggs directly in the root neck of a young cabbage or in the soil next to it.

Hatched larvae penetrate the root system and provoke decay and death of the roots. Signs of damage: faded plant species, stunted growth, darkening of the lower leaf to lead color.

Advice!
Processing the cabbage itself from a fly is useless, because the larvae attack the underground part of the plant.

Protecting cabbage from flies without using chemical insecticides is possible only by interfering with egg laying. To do this, sprinkle the earth around the cabbage with a mixture of naphthalene and sand (1: 7) or tobacco dust with lime (1: 1) in an amount of about 300 g per square meter. m

On the shortcomings of folk remedies. A significant minus of the control of cabbage pests without chemicals is the need to repeat the treatment often: spraying, dusting, curative irrigation, etc. The effect of natural remedies is unstable, and it must be constantly renewed to obtain the crop.

However, the reward for the work will be delicious, crispy, strong, and most importantly - environmentally friendly cabbage, which can be safely offered to children.

How to treat cabbage from parasites

In early spring, it is advisable to weed out all the weeds on the beds under the cabbage and the adjacent territory, thereby depriving the cruciferous flea of food.
