Spider mite remedy on indoor plants - which is better?

spider mite on indoor plants
Spider mite remedy on indoor plants

Hello! I don’t remember when I got a craving for indoor plants, but now I can’t imagine my life without them.

But my first experience in their content almost turned into a failure. At some point, almost all the poi plants were hit by a spider mite.

I was sad and lowered my hands. But at that time my mother helped me a lot, who suggested the correct procedure in such situations. Want to know a good remedy for spider mites on indoor plants? I will gladly share my experience with you.

How to deal with a spider mite on domestic plants?

It is very difficult to deal with a spider mite on indoor flowers, it is an insidious and dangerous pest. Many flower growers fail to get rid of it completely or the saved plant dies after a while.

To destroy the pest, it is very important to understand that it is an arthropod, not an insect. We have prepared for you proven recommendations from experts.

Methods of struggle

Remove the affected shoots, flowers and leaves on the plant. Carefully inspect the entire home collection. Rinse the plant thoroughly with a stream of warm water (in the shower) or wipe it with a soap or alcohol solution. Move the attacked flower to a separate location.

Important!
After the leaves have dried, treat the indoor plant and the top layer of the substrate with a drug or folk remedy. Rinse the pot in boiling water and cover the flower for 2-3 hours with a bag.

Treat all indoor flowers with anti-spider mite preparations. Wash the window sill, window frame, glass, pots on the outside and pallets with soap-and-alcohol solution.

After a week, carry out a new treatment. Rubbing with an alcohol or soap solution helps plants with smooth large leaves (dieffenbachia, calathea, ficus, etc.) well.

In the fight against spider mites, it is recommended to process all plants, especially in autumn. With improper care at home for a flower or incomplete destruction of a pest, it returns.

Therefore, in order to get rid of the spider mite, it is completely necessary to observe the rules of care and carry out preventive measures.

Plants with pubescent and delicate leaves can not be wiped, but can only be sprayed. Therefore, it is better to immediately use proven chemicals, not hoping that you can do with folk remedies.

Pest Remedies

The complexity of using drugs is that the pest is incredibly resistant to many chemicals.

In addition, the spider mite quickly adapts to them and it is necessary to alternate drugs with different active substances. For most of them, it is recommended to carry out no more than 2-3 treatments in a row.

Advice!
Since the pest is an arthropod, not an insect, it is necessary to use acaricides to kill it: specific acaricides or insectoacaricides, not insecticides.

The drugs are divided into groups of active substances, so that it is easier for you to alternate them if necessary.

We also indicate the hazard class (toxicity): 4 - low danger to humans, safe for bees and beneficial insects, 3 - moderately hazardous substance, 2 - highly hazardous substance, 1 - extremely dangerous for humans and animals.

Specific Acaricides:

  • Benzylates - "Neoron" - 3, (bromopropylate).
  • Derivatives of sulfonic acids - "Nisoran" - 4, (hexithiazox) and the group of tetronic acids - "Oberon" - 3, (spiromesifen).
  • Propargite - “Omayt 30 and 57” - 2, (propargite).
  • Pyridazipones - “Sanmayt” - 3, (pyridaben), 1 treatment per year, no smell.
  • Ketoenols - "Envidor" - 3, (spiridiclofen).
  • Quinosolines - "Demitan KS" - 2, (phenazachine).
  • Pyrazoles - "Ortus" - 3, (fenpiroximate).
  • Tetrazines - “Apollo” - 4, (clofentesin), “Flumayt” - 4, (fluwenzine)

Insectoacaricides:

  • On the basis of organophosphorus substances - “Actellik” - 2, (pyrimifos-methyl), “Dursban” - 3, (chlorpyrifos) and “Karbofos” (“Malathion”, “Fufanon”) - 3, (malathion).
  • Based on the derivatives of the synthesis of the fungus Streptomyces avermitilis: Akarin (the old name Agravertin) and Kleschevit - 4, avertin (a tick almost never gets used to it), Aktofit - 4, (aversectin C), Vertimek - 2, (abamectin), Fitoverm - 4, (aversectin C).

Which drug to choose? Now a large number of tools are available and it is easy to get confused. We selected drugs by price, effectiveness and affordability in purchase. Among the proposed options, each grower will be able to find his best remedy for spider mites.

Inexpensive and affordable (hypermarkets, flower shops):

  • “Fitoverm” - price: package (ampoule) 4ml - 15-20 rubles.
  • “Tick-borne” - price: 4 ml - 13-20 rubles.
  • “Akarin” - price: 4 ml - 13-20 rubles.
  • “Karbofos” - price: 30 gr - 30-40 rubles (pungent unpleasant odor).
  • "Neoron 50% ke" - price: 12.5 g - 25-35 rubles (very persistent smell).
  • "Actellik" - price: 2 ml - 30-50 rubles. In Russia, the drug for personal use was not registered on 01.10.2016. Although sometimes the drug can still be found in small stores and on the Internet.

Prices are based on Obi, Leroy Merlin type hypermarkets according to the exchange rate of 1 dollar = 65 rubles. These drugs are widely found in many flower shops.

Many effective remedies for spider mite are sold in large packages that are expensive and are sold in manual packaging, for example, on the Internet at Avito, forums or in flower shops.

For example, Nissoran (60 dollars, manual packing 5 grams - 100 rubles), Envidor (60 dollars / liter, manual packing 5 ml - 200 rubles), Vertimek (90 dollars / liter, manual packing - 2 ml - 25 rubles).

"Apollo" in manual packaging - 2 ml - 30 rubles, "Oberon" manual packaging 1 ml - 65 rubles, 2 ml - 130 rubles, "Sunmight" manual packaging 5 g - 100 rubles. “Flumayt” (liter / 40 dollars, manual packing of 2 ml - 35 rubles). "Actofit" - 200 ml - 300-400 rubles.

Prices are taken in one of the online stores from Khimki (Moscow region) _liliaflowers.ru. Maybe someone has a need to purchase these drugs and someone will come in handy.

Vertimekom, Karbofos and Aktellik can process indoor plants only in the open air.

"Fitoverm" from the spider mite. "Fitoverm" is an insecticide of biological origin of the 4th class of toxicity. The drug does not destroy the spider mite at all stages of development.

Attention!
Therefore, to get rid of the pest, spray indoor flowers with Fitoverm - 2 ml of the drug per 200 ml of water every 5-8 days, depending on the temperature, age and size of the plant, usually 3-4 procedures are enough.

According to flower grower reviews, three treatments every five days help get rid of the spider mite on the home flower in most cases.

“Fitoverm” against spider mites has been successfully used by many flower growers for several years. The drug has an excellent reputation and high efficiency in pest control.

A week after the last or next spraying with Fitoverm, the plant can be treated with Epin to maintain a room flower.

Neoron. This acaricide with an ovicidal effect is able to destroy not only an adult tick, but also its eggs. Therefore, most often, 2-3 procedures are enough to get rid of the pest on domestic plants.

However, some experts recommend Neoron to carry out only one treatment in 30-40 days.

"Actellik" from the spider mite. In the event of a mass lesion or a decrease in the effectiveness of the previous agent, experts recommend the use of more powerful chemicals: Actellik with the active substance - pyrimifos-methyl.

This tool is actively used in greenhouses. Actellik effectively exterminates the tick and many other arthropods and insects. The drug belongs to the 2nd class of chemical hazard, it is toxic to pets and people.

"Actellic" against spider mite is used after 4-5 days. It is recommended to carry out no more than 2 consecutive treatments to avoid pest adaptation. Processing plants "Actellic" should be carried out only outdoors.

Important!
"Aktara" from the spider mite. Actara is a very popular and effective tool in the fight against many pests. However, "Aktara" is an insecticide, and the spider mite is not an insect and the drug will be powerless in the fight against it.

Therefore, the drug "Aktara" against spider mite is ineffective. And if you treated the flower with Actara and pests, it noticeably decreased, then this is not the merit of the drug, but the spraying procedure. Nevertheless, periodically there are reviews of flower growers who are satisfied with the use of "Actara" from ticks.

Zoo shampoos and remedies for fleas or bugs. To get rid of the tick on home flowers, you can use zoo shampoos or drops from fleas for animals, as well as means to destroy bugs. They contain chemicals (often of the same group as acaricides) and excrete spider mites. However, as a rule, funds are much more expensive.

The treatment plan for indoor plants with drugs

Since the tick lays eggs, most chemicals are recommended to be applied according to this principle.

  1. The first treatment with acaricides destroys 65-80% of pests.
  2. The second treatment with acaricides is carried out after about 5-10 days (the hotter, the faster), when new spider mites emerge from the eggs.
  3. The third procedure is carried out after about 6-8 days to destroy the remaining pests for sure.

At the same time, there still remains the possibility that somewhere spider mites were able to survive and appear after some time. Therefore, continue to quarantine and regularly inspect the plant. Many experienced flower growers fight with ticks intermittently.

Before using any drug for the first time, experts recommend checking its effect on a single flower. If after a day his condition has not worsened, then with this tool it is possible to treat other plants of the same species.

Once again, we recall that experts recommend alternating drugs with various active substances in order to get rid of the spider mite on indoor flowers completely and faster.

If you see that after the 2nd procedure the processing efficiency has significantly decreased, then do not neglect the advice.

15-20 minutes before the control treatment of the indoor flower, put a piece of cucumber in a pot on the ground to attract spider mites. Before choosing a drug, find out its active substance in the way that it can coincide in funds with different names.

Advice!
If you did not manage to remove the spider mite before winter or the plant is very badly affected, then in 99% it is better to throw it away. Drugs are powerless in the fight against wintering females.

How to properly process indoor flowers with drugs:

  • When working with chemicals, be sure to take care of personal protective measures (skin, respiratory system). After processing the plants, wash your hands and face with soap, and thoroughly rinse your throat and nose with water.
  • Only process the flower dry.
  • Better time for processing is until 12.00. On a cloudy day, until 14.00. During and after treatment, direct sunlight should not fall on the indoor flower before drying.
  • The optimum temperature is 20-26 degrees heat. At this temperature, the active substances of specific acaricides have a maximum effect on the spider mite.
  • As a place for treatment with drugs of the 3rd and 4th class of toxicity, you can choose a balcony or a bathroom. And drugs of the 2nd class - only in the open air.
  • To maximize the effect of treating the plant with a chemical product, it is recommended to add soap to the solution.
  • Spraying should be plentiful that "already flowed".
  • An ideal treatment for small indoor plants from spider mites would be immersion in a 50% acaricidal solution.

How to get rid of folk remedies?

Folk remedies are very popular, despite the large number of chemicals and the low effectiveness of folk methods.

Experts note that in the fight against spider mites, each situation is individual and even in similar cases, the result from the use of folk remedies or drugs may differ.

Folk remedy is significantly inferior in effectiveness to special chemicals and does not save indoor plants in most cases. Especially home flowers with pubescent and delicate leaves that can only be sprayed.

If you still decide to get rid of the spider mite with the help of folk remedies, then the most effective are hot showers, alcohol, infusion of garlic and onions. These folk remedies, in our experience, have helped in some situations.

Spider Mite Alcohol. Rubbing with alcohol (ammonia, boric) is especially effective for plants with wide leathery leaves (aroid (adenium, alocasia, etc.), arrowroot with unrefined leaves (calatea, etc.), philodendrons (monstera)).

And also for hibiscus, dieffenbachia, ficus, date palm and other "thick-skinned" plants.

Attention!
Liquid ammonia effectively destroys the spider mite at all stages of development (some growers claim that alcohol is powerless against mite eggs). However, the tick hides in hard-to-reach places where it is impossible to treat with a cotton swab.

Therefore, fighting a spider mite at home is ideal during a plant transplant. Then ammonia will be even more effective.

On the example of a cactus: for this, a purified plant from excessive soil mixture is lowered for 5-6 seconds in ammonia. Then the roots are dried on paper and the flower is transplanted into a new substrate. Alcohol does not burn the roots and body of the cactus.

In addition to the cactus, this method of combating the spider mite can be used for small plants or to lower only the roots, and wipe the top with a swab.

The day after wiping the leaves with ammonia, they must be washed with a clean, damp cloth. If a spider mite is found, immediately wipe the stem, leaves, pot with tray, window sill and window frame with glass of medical alcohol.

You can not fight the spider mite with alcohol on petunia, fuchsia and other home flowers with thin leaves.

Spider Mite Soap. Among folk remedies for spider mites, soap occupies an important place. Affected plants and for prevention are recommended to be washed with soapy water:

  • Soap can be taken tar, green potash or household, in extreme cases, you can take any and even dishwashing detergent.
  • With a soapy solution, the plant is completely treated, as well as the windowsill, window frame, pot and pan of the pot.
  • The more foam, the better.
  • After wiping the plants, it is better to wash off the soap foam after 2-4 hours.
  • After washing off the solution, put a plastic bag on the flower for a day to kill as many spider mites as possible with the help of high humidity.
  • You can lightly spray with a soapy solution and the top layer of the earth, but it is important to prevent getting on the roots of the flower.

If there are a lot of plants and they are with small leaves, in order not to wipe each one, they can be sprayed with soapy water. The effect of the treatment will be lower, but not everyone has the time or patience to wipe.

Important!
Some experts insist that the use of a soap solution in the fight against spider mites on indoor flowers is not permissible.

In their opinion, soap is not able to destroy the pest, and also blocks the stomata of the plant, which leads to disruption of photosynthesis and plant development.

Garlic vs. Spider Mite. The average head of garlic (30-40 grams) is peeled and made slurry, put in a jar and pour 500 ml of water. The jar is closed with a lid and put in a dark place for five days.

Then the infusion is filtered, diluted with water 1 to 1 and indoor plants are sprayed.

2nd RECIPE. Porridge from one large clove of garlic, pour a glass of boiling water, leave for 5-7 minutes and after straining, you can immediately spray.

Onion vs. Spider Mite. To prepare the infusion, pour 100 grams of onion husk with five liters of water. They insist in a dark place for five days. Then they are filtered and the home flowers are sprayed with the resulting infusion.

According to gardeners, onion peel against a spider mite often helps with a small number of pests.

2nd RECIPE. Grind the medium onion (60-90 grams), pour 500 ml of water and leave for 6-7 hours in a bowl with a lid closed. After filtering, you can spray home plants with infusion.

Add 3-4 drops of iodine (1 ml per liter of water) to the infusion to enhance the effect. Many gardeners use onions with iodine against a spider mite.

Recipes of other folk remedies:

  • CELANDINE. 100 g of dried or 400 g of fresh celandine pour a liter of boiling water and leave for 24 hours.
  • PEPPER. 50 grams of chilli peppers, infuse in 500 ml of water.
  • A TOMATO. Grind 50 g of dried tomato leaves, pour a liter of water and leave for 2-3 hours.
  • POTATOES. 100 grams of green potato tops insist in a liter of water for 3-4 hours.
  • MILLENNIUM. Pour 500 ml of boiling water over 50 g of dry yarrow inflorescences and leave for two days.
  • SORREL. Pour 500 ml of water, chopped horse sorrel roots (30 g) and leave for 3-4 hours.
  • DANDELION. Insist for 2-3 hours in a liter of water 40 grams of leaves or 30 grams of dandelion roots.

Fighting the spider mite: subtleties

AIR HUMIDITY. To enhance the effect of the use of folk remedies or drugs, it is necessary to maintain uncomfortable conditions for the pest.

Advice!
Maintain high air humidity by regularly spraying and rinsing the leaves of the plant with plain water (1-3 times a day depending on temperature).

Complete these procedures by placing water trays around the pot. But all the same, an air humidifier copes with this task more effectively.

HOT SHOWER. Rinsing under a hot shower significantly helps to combat the spider mite on indoor plants.

Already at 40 ° C, the development of ticks and planes ceases, so the optimum water temperature will be - 44-47 ° C (up to 52 ° C for hibiscus, monstera or Benjamin's ficus).

The washing procedure should last no more than 3-4 minutes. Rinse with hot water leaves on both sides to destroy spider mites as much as possible. As well as flower stems and topsoil.

On average, the procedure is done every 3-4 days for the first three procedures, then three procedures once a week, and once a month for monitoring. Plants are washed only when the soil mixture has dried out at least in the upper third.

To enhance the effect of washing, before the procedure, wipe the leaves of the plant with soapy foam and leave it for 5-10 minutes.

Some gardeners managed to get rid of spider mites without the use of drugs. They only washed indoor flowers under a hot shower 3-4 times a week for the first two weeks and 1-2 times a week for the next two weeks.

2nd OPTION. Before growing, some gardeners cover the substrate in a pot on top of the film so as not to wet it. After a hot shower, the film is removed, and the flower is covered with a bag (transparent) and tied so that air enters through the gap.

Attention!
Plant care is continued as usual and after a week the package is removed. After 4-5 days, the procedure is repeated to destroy the next generation of pests.

A hot shower does not guarantee victory over spider mites, but it is safe and it is recommended to be used in the first place, especially with a small number.

Hot showers are contraindicated in plants with pubescent and delicate leaves (gesneriaceae (violets) and others). They make a steam room for such flowers: they bring the plant to the bathroom and turn on a shower with a maximum water temperature.

They wait until the room is filled with steam (8-10 minutes) and leave the flower for another 10-15 minutes. If financial opportunities allow, it is advisable not to turn off the shower all this time.

Prevention

To prevent any pest and disease, the main thing is to regularly and carefully inspect the home plant. Early detection is the key to a successful fight.

Since the tick loves warm and dry air, it is necessary to create unfavorable conditions for it.

Regular spraying or washing the leaves of indoor plants, especially in dry and hot weather (every day in the summer) prevents the appearance and development of the pest.

Rinse home plants every 3-4 weeks under a hot shower. How to do this better, we wrote above. This is especially important if the indoor flower has already hit a spider mite. Set a new indoor plant for 2-3 weeks separately from others to avoid infection of the entire home collection (quarantine).

A medical ultraviolet lamp helps very well: monthly plant irradiation for about 2 minutes strengthens the immune system.

We get rid of the spider mite on indoor plants: means and methods

The insidious spider mite on indoor plants appears without invitation. Its larvae or eggs can blow out on the windowsill and the wind, but most often this parasite makes its way into the house with new flowerpots bought in the store.

Important!
Signs of damage to the plant by the spider mite are light spots and dots on the back of the leaves, and also a thin spider web surrounding the plant. Mites themselves can be considered only under a magnifying glass, because they are very small, but the harm from them is enormous.

Any flower can choose a spider mite, but more often it settles on roses and chrysanthemums. as soon as the grower has diagnosed the presence of a spider mite colony on the flower, urgent measures must be taken to cure the plant and protect other flowers.

Propagating, the spider mite provokes the death of a favorite flower, but more dangerous is the transfer of gray rot and other plant infections by it.

Fighting technique

The initial step to save the flower will be its complete isolation, so that the parasites do not have time to move and multiply. It is necessary not to be too lazy and to examine all plants with a magnifying glass. Next, you need to know how to deal with the spider mite correctly.

The steps will be as follows:

  • Abundant washing of the outer part of the plant with warm water and laundry soap.
  • Watering with cold water.
  • For three days, cover the plants with a plastic bag or a plastic bottle.
  • Processing the flower with acaricides or insectocoricides, according to the instructions of the specific means.
  • Processing with household soap (alcohol) the place where the diseased plant stood (window sill, window).
  • After 5 days, secondary treatment with other drugs, even in the absence of visible signs of parasites.

Chemicals

Ticks are not insects, but arachnids, so fighting with insecticidal drugs is useless. Spider mite preparations are needed here, namely acaricides.

Some destroy exclusively spider mites, but there are those that drive out not only ticks, but also other parasites.

When buying a drug, it is important to think not only about the effectiveness of the drug, but also about the degree of its toxicity. For example, Actellik and Marshal are not used in an apartment or in a house. Processing with such drugs is carried out on the street. When the smell disappears, only then they bring it into the room.

The best preparations for spider mites on indoor plants are:

  • "Fitoverm" is a biological insectoacaricide in ampoules. 1 ml of the drug is diluted in 1 liter. water and pour into a bucket, getting 10 liters of solution. It has the smallest toxicity.
  • Antiklesch and Fufanon are identical means. 10 ml of the chemical is dissolved in 10 l. cool water and washed the diseased plant.
  • "Actellic" is a toxic drug, which cannot be allowed to drain onto the ground. 2 ml of the drug is diluted in 1-2 liters. water and stir.
  • Apollo and Nisoran even destroy eggs. Adult ticks are not killed, but sterilized. 2 ml funds are diluted in 5 liters. cold water.
  • Neoron reduces tick colonies. 10 ml dissolved in 1 bucket of water. The solution must be consumed within 2 hours.
  • "Omight 30" (powder) and "Omight 57" (concentrate). The first is bred 3-5 g. 1 liter of cold water, the second 1.5 ml in 1 liter. water. Very toxic drug.

How to process indoor flowers?

Before you start processing the flower, you need to buy it in the shower. This will not completely destroy the spider mite on indoor flowers, but will reduce its population.

Advice!
Work must be carried out with gloves and in the open air (in the garden, on the balcony) or in the bathroom. It is necessary to process indoor plants from a spider mite up to 12 hours at an air temperature of 21-25 degrees.

The processing procedure consists of the following steps:

  • The chemical is bred in a bucket, exactly following the instructions;
  • The soil is closed with a plastic bag so that it does not crumble, and also the chemical agent does not fall on it;
  • The flowerpot is turned upside down and dipped in a solution;
  • You need to chat and shake so that the liquid gets everywhere on the leaves.

Some gardeners prefer spraying from spray guns. Rinsing in a bucket with a solution is much safer for the person himself, and also more effective for combating spider mites.

In the process of life, ticks lay eggs, therefore, the drug must be used in 3 stages:

  1. First, adults are removed with one means;
  2. After 5-6 days, a second treatment with another agent is performed (ticks quickly get used to the poison) in order to destroy individuals that have hatched by this time;
  3. After another 6 days, it is worth conducting a control third treatment. The tool is better to take another.

Water. If the spider mite has just begun to spoil the flower, you can really do without chemistry, and use water. For example, for a week every day 2-3 times wipe the leaves with a damp cloth, and then spray with a spray bottle, creating a moist environment. It is moisture that mites do not like.

This method is especially suitable for plants with large leaves (dieffenbachia, ficus, croton).

If the spider mite on indoor plants has recently wound up, the flower can be arranged with a “wet therapy”.

For this purpose, you need to cover the pot with cellophane and buy a flower in the shower. Next, the cellophane is removed, and a plastic bag is put on the plant itself and tied.

The soil should remain open. After 5-6 days, the package is removed. After a week, the procedure is repeated again. The moisture collected in the bag will kill the tick, and repeated processing will expel new mites that have hatched from eggs.

So that mold does not appear from excessive moisture in flower pots, preventive measures should be taken.

Folk remedies

Fighting the spider mite on indoor plants without chemistry is possible only at the initial stages of the disease. Folk remedies are non-toxic, but ineffective.

Attention!
Most often, they start a fight with a spider mite with a soap solution. It is applied to the leaves, but only for 3 hours, and then washed off, otherwise it will harm the plant.

Among herbs, they most often use such infusions:

  • Capsicum (100 g) is infused in 1 liter of water;
  • Leaves from a tomato (40 g) are crushed, filled with 1 liter of water and insisted for 2 hours;
  • Onions (1 pc.) Are cut and insisted for 6 hours in 1 liter of water, then filtered;
  • Fresh leaves of celandine (400 g) are cut into small pieces, pour 1 liter of boiled water and, having insisted for 24 hours, filtered.

In any herbal infusion add liquid or laundry soap. For 1 liter of infusion 4 g. Fresh solution immediately and sprayed several times a day. Repeat the procedure after 5 days a couple of times.

Well there is a fight against a spider mite with the help of garlic infusion. 2 heads of garlic are finely chopped and poured with 1 liter of water, after which they are tightly closed and insisted in a dark place for 5 days. Before spraying sick flowers, infusions are diluted with water (1: 1).

An infusion of onion husks is also a good remedy for the spider mite that has recently wound up on a room flower. Take 5 liters of water and 100 grams of onion husks, insist 5 days.

Preventative measures

If you periodically inspect the plants, then you will not be able to miss the initial phase of infection with a spider mite. This means that there will be chances to save the plant, not allow the pest to spread, and ideally, not to think how to get rid of such a scourge.

Preventive measures are:

  • Regular spraying of plants with water. Dry air and low humidity contribute to the appearance of a spider mite.
  • Increasing humidity around the plant by installing dishes with water on the windowsill.
  • Timely removal of fallen leaves, old branches, faded buds, as well as dusting from leaves.
  • Irradiation of plants with an ultraviolet lamp, especially from below. Not more than 2 minutes 1 time in 6-7 days.
  • To put plants near an open window or in a draft (if the plant does not bloom and is not afraid of drafts).
  • Periodically place flowers on the balcony or in the garden. So humidity will increase and there is a chance that ticks will be attacked by their natural enemies (for example, ants).
  • A new plant in the house must be kept separate from others for 3 weeks.

Spider mite - how to fight on domestic plants

Lovers of indoor plants often encounter a wide variety of pests, among which a spider mite stands out, a remedy for which it is very difficult to pick up.

Important!
On the back of the drying and falling leaves of your favorite plant, you can see white dots. Often this is a spider mite.

To deal with it, sometimes you have to turn to a wide variety of drugs. Sometimes one treatment is not enough to completely destroy the pest.

Description and Features

Spider mite is a tiny pest from the arachnid family. The dimensions of his body do not exceed 0.5 mm. If you consider a tick with a magnifying glass, you can consider that an adult has four pairs of legs, and its oval body is covered with small hairs.

The color of the body of the tick depends on its variety. Usually they have a green color, but individuals are reddish or orange. Also, the color of the body of the pest largely depends on the plants that it feeds on.

Spider mites are able, like spiders, to weave a thin, barely noticeable with an armed eye, spider web that braids the leaves of the plant on which they live.

These pests have the ability to multiply very quickly and are able to cross from one plant to another in a short time. Individuals mature only two or less weeks after the eggs have been laid.

Low temperatures and high humidity in the room negatively affect the reproduction of pests. With improving conditions, it is even possible to slow the development of spider mite larvae.

The pest can attack not only the leaves of indoor crops, but also the petals of flowers. He especially loves the flowers of a room rose.

A spider mite, settling on the foliage of a room culture, gnaws a leaf and sucks its contents. The result is white dots and a thin cobweb on the leaves of the plant.

Causes and signs of damage

The causes of the appearance of the spider mite can be very diverse. Firstly, it is easy to bring a pest from the flower shop in which the houseplant was bought. Secondly, the spider mite can move to the windowsill from the street. This is especially often possible if the plant is located on the lower floor or on the balcony.

Advice!
Another reason is the increased air temperature and its dryness. Very often, a spider mite begins to attack plants at the height of the heating season, when the humidity is very low due to heating radiators and other appliances and the rare ventilation of the room.

Please note: the peculiarity of the pest is that in cold weather it is in hibernation. And he wakes up only when climatic conditions change. This also applies to eggs, which can also be in hibernation for several years!

The result of the activity of the arachnid are numerous white dots. The underside of the leaves is covered with a thin white spider web. With a serious lesion, the leaves are completely braided by a web and become white. At the tips of the leaves you can see the bodies of pests.

Subsequently, the leaves begin to dry and fall off. Usually at this stage, owners of indoor crops begin to struggle with ticks. These pests are carriers of a wide variety of diseases - gray rot and viral infections.

How to fight at home?

As soon as a spider mite has been noticed, it is necessary to start a fight with it. Initially, it is required to wash the plant with a solution of warm water and laundry soap. This procedure will help to destroy part of the pests, but with large congestions it is unlikely to help.

Rinse requires not only the plant itself, but also the pot, pan and even the windowsill.

After treatment, it is recommended to cover the plants with plastic wrap or a plastic container for several days. Such manipulations will significantly increase air humidity. This will lead to the destruction of pests.

Chemicals and processing rules

The most effective method of combating ticks is the use of chemicals whose action is aimed at their destruction.

Attention!
Since the spider mite is not an insect, but a pest from the arachnid family, it is ineffective to use insecticidal drugs.

The most effective are acaricides and insect acaricides. Among them, the following drugs should be distinguished:

  1. Nissoran;
  2. Apollo
  3. Envidor;
  4. Floromite;

When processing, you should remember that the air temperature in the room was at least 18 degrees, otherwise the effect of the drug will stop.

Repeat treatment is required after 10 days if the room temperature reaches 20 degrees or after 3 days if the temperature is within 30 degrees.

Folk remedies

Among the most effective means of combating this pest are the following:

  • Rubbing with medical alcohol. To do this, you need to moisten the cotton wool with medical alcohol and wipe the leaves of the culture. This will help destroy individuals.However, spider mite eggs are resistant to this method. If the plant has very thin leaves, like petunias, then experimentation is not recommended - alcohol can damage the leaves. If the leaves are sufficiently thick and dense, then the alcohol will quickly evaporate and will not penetrate the leaf;
  • Laundry soap. About a solution of warm water with economic small was already mentioned above. This effective tool will help to destroy pests. However, it will not be possible to get rid of large clusters of ticks and eggs. It is important to note that the earthen lump cannot be washed with such a solution, this will lead to the drying of the whole plant;
  • Spraying with garlic infusion. To prepare the infusion, grind a couple of heads of garlic and add water. Such an infusion is required to be stored for five days in a dark place, and then diluted with water in equal parts and sprayed with the affected culture.

Such simple procedures will help to control pests. However, for complete destruction it is more efficient to use chemicals.

Preventative measures

The main and most effective preventive measure is to maintain high air humidity, since it is dry air that is the main reason for the development of a spider mite. To increase humidity, you will need to regularly spray plants, if the rules for caring for him allow such a procedure.

Important!
In the winter time it is required to protect plants from heaters and radiators. It is also important to regularly ventilate the room. Water tanks or aquariums can be placed next to crops. All these simple methods will help not infect plants with pests.

Thus, the spider mite is a common pest that loves to feast on the leaves of indoor plants. The main cause of the lesion is dry air. It is necessary to deal with the pest with the help of a variety of chemicals and folk remedies.

Spider mite and methods of dealing with it

The spider mite is a fairly serious pest that affects not only garden crops, but also domestic plants. It represents a rather high danger as a pest.

Pest Description

The spider mite belongs to the class of arachnids. This pest does not die from drugs that are intended to combat its like. It can have a red, orange, yellow color.

These pests can settle on the underside of plant foliage. If light spots appeared on the surface of the sheet, then this indicates the appearance of a spider mite.

At the end of time, pests begin to move to the upper side of the plants.

The spider mite has a small body, which is characterized by a rounded shape. The body of this pest is covered with noticeable setae, which are very rarely located.

Reproduction of spider mites occurs very quickly. If they are at a temperature of +15 degrees, then the development of the embryo occurs within 15 days, and at a temperature of +30 degrees - within two days.

In the autumn, spider mites prepare for wintering. They can accumulate in the winter at the bottom or top of the room. At the time of wintering, spider mites practically do not attack plants, since they do not feed at all.

Pest Control

When a pest appears, you must immediately begin to fight it. Initially, it is necessary to treat the plant with a solution of laundry soap or detergent for dishes.

Advice!
The solution must be used in a warm form so as not to injure the plant. When using this method, it will not be possible to completely get rid of the spider mite, but it is still possible to destroy half of its representatives.

When a spider mite appears on single plants, they must be removed immediately. Among the home methods of combating spider mites is watering.

After irrigation, the plants are covered with a plastic bag and in this state for three days.In order to get rid of all the offspring of the spider mite, it is necessary to produce small-drop spraying of plants.

For this purpose phosphoric or sulfuric preparations are used. The pest does not tolerate ultraviolet rays.

That is why it is hiding from the underside of plant leaves. If you irradiate the leaves with ultraviolet rays. It will not work to completely get rid of the spider mite with the help of rays, and it is quite possible to reduce their number.

In order for the tick to not appear resistant to drugs, sulfuric and phosphoric chemicals must be alternated. Also in the fight against spider mites, such insecticides are quite effective:

  • Vermitek
  • Fitoverm
  • Actofit

These drugs are capable of combating spider mites at a high level of quality. It is necessary to process plants with them several times with a frequency of two weeks.

This is because insecticides are not able to kill tick eggs and it will be necessary to wait until they are born. It is best to use enteric-contact preparations in the fight against spider mites.
Folk remedies in the fight against spider mites

Plants are sprayed with this drug. After five days, the procedure must be repeated. If a spider mite has attacked hard-leaved plants, then medical alcohol can be used to combat it.

A cotton swab is slightly wetted in alcohol. They need to grate the leaves of the plant. Apply alcohol in a thin layer so that it does not cause burns. Before carrying out this procedure, it is necessary to test the reaction of the plant to alcohol on one leaf.

Prevention of occurrence

Folk remedies and insecticides are quite effective in combating spider mites. But it is best to carry out a set of preventive measures so that this pest does not appear on plants.

Spider mites appear in dry air or in high humidity. That is why it is necessary to ensure optimal humidity in the room or in the greenhouse.

In order to avoid the appearance of this pest, it is necessary to carry out regular spraying of the plant.During the procedure it is necessary to be as careful as possible, since the accumulated water in the grooves of the leaves and in the core of the plant can lead to its decay.

Plant care consists in harvesting faded flowers and dried leaves. If this procedure is not carried out regularly, then the spider mite can easily appear on the plant. It is also necessary to wipe the dust from the plants. For this purpose, an ordinary wet cloth is used.
